Santa Monica - "The Night of the Black Cat" experienced great success with sold out performances, which prompted them to re-open for an extended run. Due to a previous theatre booking they must take a three-week hiatus in order to prepare for the new space. It will re-open at the second stage on April 15, 2005. There have been some additions to the company, which will be added to the talented cast. Performances are Friday and Saturday Evenings at 8pm and Sundays at 6pm at Edgemar Center for the Arts. There will be no show on Friday, May 13th. A cocktail and wine bar will open 30 minutes prior to the show.
"The Night of the Black Cat" takes place on one magical night when some of France's most famed artists travel through time to entertain in the salon of Germaine de Stael. It's a provocative, fun-filled musical set in the French Cabaret Le Chat Noir in Paris 1881, featuring forbidden poetry, passionate dancing and sensual music. The show is an original work based on themes that resonated through the Parisian cafe in the years after its opening. Experience a taste of a revolutionary artistic movement set in the watering hole of the worldís most influential artists including George Sand, Jane Avril, Edith Piaf, Picasso and other luminaries. The Night of the Black Cat is a mystical, magical,and sensual night.
Deborah LaVine's directorial achievements include Deaf West Theater's productions of ìTrue Westî by Sam Shepard, and ìA Streetcar Named Desire. The Tennessee Williams classic, which was performed in American Sign Language with voice interpretation, won the prestigious Los Angeles Ovation Award for Best Dramatic Production. Included among her many awards for outstanding direction are twelve Dramalogueawards, Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle nominations and a NAACP Image Award Citation. She is currently on the teaching faculty of the California Institute for the Arts.Edgemar Center for the Arts, located in Frank Gehry's architectural landmark building,is host to theatre productions, jazz and cabaret shows, revolving art exhibitions, film festivals and public arts programs serving underprivileged children in the Westside community. Michelle Danner, renowned actress and teacher, who is performing in the show, is also the Executive Artistic Director of the complex.
